Religion in Belhaven

While the temporal authority within the city is held by the Noble Houses, the spiritual authority of the city is held by the various priesthoods. Belhaven does not have any officially proscribed religion and is home to temples of many different deities. Most temples are located within the temple district, which isn’t property of any House, though there are smaller temples dotted throughout the city including private House temples. The grandest of the temples within the temple district are those of the gods most favored by House Royal: Erathis, Ioun, and Pelor. Public worship of the gods of evil is typically frowned upon, and most of those gods hold no public temples save for the bare minimum deemed necessary to placate them. Private temples, of course, are another matter entirely.

Worship of beings not conventionally recognized as gods is typically denounced publicly by the priests of the true religions when discovered, though the severity of reaction depends on the heresy in question. The worship of the demon lord Morthak, for example, provokes a stronger reaction than the veneration of Edarmirrik (a gold dragon who serves as an exarch of Erathis). Likewise, when some within the city began a cult of Oligarch worship, the servants of the true faiths responded quickly and severely due as much to the political implications of such worship as the heresy involved.
